At long last there is a recognised cure for that most depressing and lonely of ailments that is experienced by Business Travellers – ‘Lonely Hotel Room Syndrome’.
I am sure many of you have experienced it. Yet another business trip means enforced separation from your family, endless meetings in rather drab and austere corporate offices followed by evenings sat alone in your hotel room with perhaps just your laptop for company.
I bet your friends are envious of your work induced wanderlust. They are probably in awe of the list of cosmopolitan cities you have travelled to. After all it isn’t everyone who gets to fly business class, be picked up from the airport in a limo, eat in the finest restaurants (sometimes, anyway) and stay in five star hotels whilst visiting some of the most vibrant cities on the planet. ‘What are you moaning about?’ they ask as you look crestfallen at the news of yet another trip looming on the horizon.
But what they don’t realise is that the only sight seeing you get to do is through the grimy window of a train or taxi cab as you dash from one meeting to the next. But does it have to be that way? You are in a fortunate position – oh yes you are!
So what is the cure for LHR Syndrome? A very simple one; go out, enjoy yourself and experience the wealth of culture around you. Find out what is happening – what shows are on, exhibitions, concerts, operas etc. If you are not the type of person who is comfortable going along to an event alone why not find a pre-organised event. That way there is no research to be done; no long phone calls spent listening to Green Sleeves as you are held in a queue trying to book your tickets only to hear that they sold out weeks ago.
Pre-organised social events are the perfect way to meet fellow, likeminded travellers. Just think of the networking opportunities. So next time you are heading to London for a volley of meetings, don’t spend your evenings alone with only the remote control for company. Get out there and enjoy what the City has to offer.
